As a direct result of the Soviet occupations of the Baltic states during the Second World War, more than half a million Estonians, Latvians, and Lithuanians are estimated to have gone into exile in the West between 1944 and 1952. Many passed through the displaced persons’ (DP) camps of post-war Germany before resettling, both in Europe and overseas, while others travelled to Sweden.
