“Richter’s book – recently awarded the 2022 AABS Book Prize – examines the reshaping of political borders within east-central Europe as a consequence of the First World War and the break-up of three empires, viewing events through the lens of a protracted process of fragmentation. The book does not deal with east-central Europe as a whole. Of course, precisely where east-central Europe is located is a matter of debate (or perhaps opinion).
